The inventors of tiki-taka, modern football in its purist form, are rebuilding. World Champions in 2010 at the same time they were reigning European champions, there was nothing Spain couldn’t do. Things have been different since then. Brazil 2014 wasn’t a pleasant experience for La Furia Roja as they crashed out of the tournament at the group stage from a quartet which included Chile and Australia. But Spain are back. Real Madrid rule Europe at club level with Sevilla owning the Europa League. Spain is European club football and the national team is determined to return to its former glories. Every one of the players is a household name. De Gea, Piquet, Busquets, Iniesta, Ramos, Silva, to name but a few. They are beamed into our television sets every week as their clubs’ fight for the greatest prizes. When they step out in the famous red and blue, the rivalries end and the players, urged on by passionate supporters, believe they win for the glory of their country. The Spaniards are a very proud race and the team is a great source of sporting pride. It’s easy to be swept along by that passion for the XI, becoming for ninety minutes at least, an honorary Spaniard yourself.
